Guaiú coconut trees, between the
river and the cape with the same name, are the oldest
ones of the region (80 to 100 years old), and may reach 20 meters height. They
were probably a part of old coconut plantations.
Dispersed among coconuts palms, mango-trees, cashew-trees,
Piaçavas palmers, shelter thousands of birds. Preás (a kind of rabbit), Armadillos,
Saguis monkeys, Guiamus crabs, are frequently seen into this palmers gardens,
that have already appeared in several publications, the latest in the book "Brasil
Aventura, No caminho dos heróis' (Brazil Adventure, On the heroes way).
In front of Guaiú beach,
2 km from the coast, are located the
Araripe coral reefs,
probably the most majestical corals of South Bahia. Araripe constitutes the
north extremity of reef
banks that finish in Abrolhos Archipelago, 200 km to the south.
Southern Bahia coral reefs are very peculiar in South Atlantic
and remind a "small Australian barrier": they contain unique mushroom-shaped
formations, almost 30 meters deep,
the "chapeirão".
From July to October , humpback whales, arrive from Antartica to reproduce,
and come back eleven months later to give birth. The Abrolhos archipelago is
the largest area for the reproduction and breeding of this species in the whole
west Atlantic.
The reefs shelter octopusy, crayfish, shrimps, and it's not
rare to see at daybreak, dolphins jumping out close to the beach.
Finally, it worthies to emphasize that along this coast, you
find out one of the best areas in
Southern Atlantic, for Blue
Marlin fishing .
